The Victoria Cougars need a win Thursday following their 3-2 double overtime loss to the Campbell River Storm Tuesday night in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Championship Series.

The win gave the North Island Division champion Storm a 2-0 series lead.

Campbell River won the opener 3-2 in overtime last Sunday.

The Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period on a power play goal by Dane Feeney.  After receiving a pass from Tyler Welsh, Feeney walked out in front and slid the puck under Payne for his first of two goals of the night.

Gavin Rauser, who had a scoring chance during that period, returned to the Campbell River lineup after missing the previous 13 games due to a lower body injury.

The score would remain 1-0 in favour of the Storm until the 14:32 mark of the middle frame.  From the Cougars blue line, Welsh headman the puck up to Feeney who beat Payne with a well-placed backhander.

The Cougars pulled to within a goal 69 seconds after Feeney had made it 2-0.

Lervold, from behind the net, sent a pass out to Devin Mackey who one-timed the puck past Welyk.  The goal could not have happened had it not been for the fore-checking of John Kretzschmar who caused Trent Johnson to turn the puck over.

Mackey, unassisted, tied the game at 6:43 of the third period with his second marker of the night and sixth goal of the playoffs.

Both goaltenders came up with some huge saves late in regulation and in the overtime periods.

Shots on goal favoured the Storm, 35-23.

Sam McMullen, who leads all scorers with 20 playoff points, was held off the score sheet for the second straight game.

Both teams also received a couple of power plays opportunities in both overtime periods but were unable to capitalize.

Special teams were a factor as Campbell River finished 2-for-8 with the man advantage while the Cougars went 0-for-3.
