Strong wind keeps SCYC sailors on their toes

Just over a minute separates the two lead boats in a local race full of wind that caused damage

A 20-knot wind last Sunday helped give crews plenty of action on the racecourse for the fourth installment of the Schooner Cove Yacht Club’s Fall Colours Series.

The ten-mile course saw the seven competing vessels race around some of the local islands and navigational buoys. There was plenty of opportunity for the crews to get a good workout in both upwind and downwind sailing.

The stiff breeze meant that all crewmembers had to be extra careful during the maneuvers. Though there were no serious injuries, there were reports of gear damage with at least one shredded sail and some broken lines.

The competition was tight and just a little over one minute separated Flight and Shingebiss at the finish line.

Race five in the series runs November 16.
