Vernon Subway used a balanced attack in a 5-3 win over H&R Block in Under 18 girls youth soccer play Saturday at Marshall Field.

H&R was shortstaffed so the teams played nine-aside for the majority of the game. Kim Wilson and Laura Hulstein turned in masterful defence for Subway, while stellar midfield play came from Isabella Winther and Jen Proce.

Scoring goals for Subway were Doortje Geelkerken, Marisa Atkinson, Isabelle Weber-Concannon, Ciana Fitzpatrick and Natalie Moore. Amy Huber and Taryn Douma split the goalkeeping duties.

The defensive line of Mariead Raupach, Emma Dolman and Kaylee Barss never gave up and worked hard for H&R, who reeled off three unanswered goals in the second half by the injured Kate Alexander. Damille Butler, Jenica Camalush, Corinne Lavigne and Allysa Pembleton were tireless in the midfield.

In other Subway U18 girls action, the Nixon Wenger Navy Seals grounded Vernon Kia Red 6-1.

The Seals struck first midway through the first half when Sequoia Moana-Korner buried the rebound after a shot from Carlee Meausette.

Kia came back strong, but the Seals added to their lead when Kendall Tomiak finished another rebound off a hard shot from Kaely Johnson. Melanie Wakutz made it 3-0 for the Seals, before Kia got a goal back just before half time.

Despite some great goalkeeping from Kia’s Cherish Ayers, the Seals used the wind to their advantage in the second half, getting quick goals from Meausette and Karley Geefs before Wakutz capped the scoring with a great shot from a tough angle late in the game.

The Seals got an excellent defensive effort from Siobhan Clancy, while an injured Aliyah Akkurt did a great job in her first-ever game in net.

Team Orange iced Team White in Subway U14/15 girls play Saturday, getting two goals and one assist from Erin Delaney.

Hannah Swift, Dayna Whibley, Maddy Johnson, Jade Sims and Ania Splawinski each supplied singles. Solid goalkeeping came from Katelyn Paulin and Maddy Percy.

Team Orange bounced Yellow 7-1 on a very windy Marshall #5 pitch in Subway U14/15 boys play Saturday afternoon.

The Orange crew started the scoring early when striker Carlos Frizzo dribbled downfield, drew the keeper out and then sent a sweet feed to Brennan Seltzer for the finish.

Frizzo exploded for four more goals, the last coming off a great cross from Caleb Haberstock. Justin Havercamp showed great speed on right wing and was rewarded with a beautiful goal assisted by Jacob Bevan and Seltzer.

Havercamp then passed the ball to Seltzer who buried his second. Orange’s tight defence came from Gaman Niijar, Chase Petruk, Riley Bos, Aidan Webber-Concannon and Eli Garlick.

Navy played a very solid game and controlled the play in a 4-1 win over White in Royal LePage Under 13 boys action.

Roadrunner Brandon Chai scored twice for Navy, while Rylan Brown and Steven Benischek, on a sweet feed by Xander Sladen, had singles.

The White goal came in the second half when Ben Poulin sprung Gavin Huggins with a beautifully fed ball through the gap. Huggins showed poise in the box making the keeper and defender miss. He then crossed the ball to Tyler Jackson, who one timed the ball for a great finish.

Ethan Ehman worked hard in the second half and Callum Takasaka was firm on defence.

Nick Mitchell and Brenden Whitmore, with the winner, handled the offence as the Mangos clipped the Reds 2-1 in other U13 play. Mitchell and Garrett Birch shared the Mangos’ goalkeeping.

Hustling Chris Hewison turned in a great showing for the Mangos. Brett Hansen replied for the Reds and played one strong half in net.
