Sun dispose of Huskers in season opener

Okanagan score four second-half touchdown to win first game of BCFC season in Chilliwack

The Sun scored 31 points in the second half to blast the Valley Huskers 41-7 in the season opener on Saturday night in Chilliwack.

After no scoring in the first quarter, Hunter Verhulst kicked a 21 yard field goal halfway way through the second quarter to put the visitors on the board with 7:33 to go.

Just under two minutes later Alex Bradley scampered in to the end zone from 19 yards out to give the Sun at 10-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the early stages of the third quarter Cam Bedore threw his first touchdown pass of the season, finding Zach Regert for a 34 yard strike.

Then at 11:38 of the third, Robbie Yochim showed his blazing speed intercepting a pass and returning it 66 yards for a pick six.

Verhulst gave the Sun a 27 point lead with his second field goal of the game from 38 yards away.

With time ticking away in the third the Huskers finally put a quality drive together finishing with a 51 touchdown pass to Tyrone Ledinghman to give the home crowd something to cheer about.

In the fourth quarter back-up quarterback Josiah Joseph got an opportunity for some reps.  He made the most of his opportunity scoring two touchdowns with his feet.  The first score he ran in from 18 yards out at 10:24, before scoring on a three yard touchdown run with 28 seconds left in the game.

Brennan Van Nistelrooy showed his incredible talent on two highlight reel plays.  The first, he shot through the line on a 16 yard field goal attempt and blocked it.  The second was a 45 yard run off a fake punt gathering enough yards for a first down allowing the offense to continue to drive.

In Week 2, the Sun will stay on the road and face the Langley Rams (1-0) at McLeod Park Stadium.  The Rams beat the Vancouver Island Raiders 44-36 on Saturday night.  Kick-off on Saturday is scheduled for 7:00pm.
