In what was a predictable outcome long before the opening kick off, the Okanagan Sun drubbed the Valley Huskers 66-3 Saturday night in B.C. Football Conference action.
The unbeaten Sun (5-0) swept the season series from winless Chilliwack (0-5) by a combined score of 130-3 and have beaten the Huskers 28 of 29 all-time meetings.
With Josiah Joseph at the controls, the home side scored on its first possession as Dillon Fortune ran into the end zone from 11 yards out.
On the ensuing kickoff, Kegan Hughes jarred the ball loose from the Huskers returner. Tyler Geisler scooped up the residuals and returned it for a 17-yard score to make to 14-0 and the route was on.
In all Fortune finished the first half with eight carries for 66 yards, as the Sun as a team collected 183 yards on the ground in the first half alone. Joseph was very accurate in the first half, finishing 11 of 12 for 171 yards and a three-yard touchdown strike to Kyle Patchell.
Meanwhile, the Sun defence was stellar once again, allowing 23 yards in the first half and 14 yards through the air.
They got on the scoreboard as well when Raquille Cespedes intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards for a pick six with 1:19 remaining in the first half.
Also in the second quarter rookie quarterback Keith Zyla hit a streaking Terrance Williams for a 57-yard touchdown bomb. It was both players first touchdown of their junior careers.
Braden Mann got in on the act with his first touchdown of the season, blasting his way in from two yards out.
In the second half Joseph threw two more touchdown passes, as Patchell caught his second and Pierre Luc-Lord hauled in a TD from 23 yards out.
Joseph finished 15 of 18 for 238 yards and three touchdowns. Zyla was 2 of 6 for 105 yards and a major.
The ground attack compiled 279 yards, led by Fortune’s 89 yards. Fortune, Mann and Abdi-Nasier Abdi scored rushing touchdowns.
The Huskers offence had no answer for the Sun “D” finishing with 71 yards on the ground and 63 through the air. They recorded just six first downs in the game, five of which coming in the second half. The only points they scored was a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter.
The Sun will pay a visit to the Langley Rams (3-2) on Saturday night.
