Okanagan Sun linebacker JT Fernandez died Thursday at the age of 21.
“This is a tragic day for our organization,” said team president Paul Carson. “JT was a wonderful person and a standout on the football field. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.”
Details of Fernadez’ death will be released at the appropriate time.
Fernandez was one of the best linebackers in Sun history. In two seasons with the Junior A football Sun, the Cloverdale native made 47 solo tackles, three sacks, two fumbles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and blocked two kicks.
The Sun game scheduled for Saturday night against the Westshore Rebels at the Apple Bowl will continue as planned at 7 p.m.
The players will be wearing special stickers on their helmets in memory of Fernandez.
The Sun are 6-1, the Rebels 2-5.
