Sun Peaks year in review

Snow and awards piling up at Canada’s second largest ski area

It’s been quite a year for the resort community of Sun Peaks. In addition to opening over 500 acres of new terrain and becoming Canada’s second largest ski area, the resort can celebrate several awards from top ski and travel publications. And awards aren’t the only thing piling up at Sun Peaks – so is the snow!

Looking back over 2014, the highly respected travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveller, recently included Sun Peaks Resort in its selection of Top Ten Family Ski Resorts. The resort was the only Western Canadian destination to be included.

Also, earlier this fall, Sun Peaks was ranked #2 Best Overall Resort in the annual SBC Resort Guide for the second consecutive year, which is compiled by the editorial staff of four leading national snow sports publications.

Sun Peaks was also recognized across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans this year.

The UK’s Daily Telegraph named Sun Peaks at the top of their Best Family Ski Resorts and was one of only three North American resorts to make the list.

Sun Peaks also received mentions for 5 Mile ski run in Best Blue Ski Runs for Cruising and Still Smokin’ ski run in World’s Best Tree Skiing.

The Telegraph also recognized Sun Peaks as the best place for beginners in their round up of Best Canadian Ski Resorts.

The 2014 World Snow Awards shortlisted Sun Peaks in the categories of Most Improved Resort, North America, and The Eco Award, and was among industry heavy weights such as Whistler Blackcomb and Jackson Hole.

Down Under, Sun Peaks was named Best Kids Ski School by Australia’s Holidays With Kids magazine.

The same publication also recognized Sun Peaks as #8 in Best International Family Ski Resorts in their 2014 Best of Family Travel Awards. Sun Peaks was one of only three Canadian destinations included in the category and was recognized beside international titans such as Niseko, Japan and Aspen, Colorado.

Sun Peaks rang in the New Year with thousands of guests at the base of Sundance mountain during the spectacular Big Air Invitational, Torchlight Parade, and fireworks display.

With plenty of fresh snow over New Years, and an alpine snow base of 126 cm, holiday guests at Sun Peaks enjoyed fresh turns in the deep, light and fluffy powder that the resort is famous for.

Over ninety per cent of trails are open with top to bottom skiing on all three mountains.
