Students of Vernon’s Sundance Taekwon-Do School sparkled at the International Taekwon-Do Federation of B.C. Championships April 9 in Kamloops.
The Vernon club had 15 members competing in a field of 200 and brought home 26 medals, including eight gold, 10 silver and eight bronze.
Head instructor David White was extremely proud of his club’s showing.
“Everybody’s been training really hard for this tournament; all our competitors gave their very best performance,” said White.
Maira Wilson placed first in her pattern category while getting silver in sparring. Jill Halvorson took home a gold medal in the 6-to-8-year-old yellow belt patterns category, while also taking a silver medal in sparring.
Cole Mackay struck gold in boys 6 to 8 yellow belt sparring and bronze in patterns. His sister, Dannon Mackay, earned gold in the 9 to 11 white belt sparring division and silver in sparring.
Also gaining provincial championship titles were black belt competitors Kai and Taylor Halvorson. Kai took gold in both patterns and sparring in the Pre-junior boys category, while Taylor had the same results in the Junior girls black belt division.
Also competing was Chris Rock in the men’s black belt patterns and sparring categories, where he took two silver medals.
Mitchell Alexander garnered silver in the 12-14 blue belt boys sparring category, while Ciara Wilson won bronze in both patterns and sparring for the 9-11 girls blue belt.
Competing in the same category was Allegra Spruce who took bronze in the sparring division. Braekyn Spruce won double silver in the 9-11 girls green belt division, while Sarah Crerar won silver in her sparring category and bronze in sparring in the same class.
Brandon Bell took bronze in 15-17 boys yellow belt sparring while his brother Brett Bell took the bronze in his 12-14 boys red belt sparring.
Rounding out the medalists from Sundance was Geoff Halvorson who took silver in men’s 35+ red belt patterns and won bronze in sparring.
“The dedication of everyone involved manifests itself in our results at tournaments like these,” said White.
