Surrey Dodgeball League shows Christmas spirit

The league's costumed Christmas Charity tournament raises funds for the Surrey Christmas Bureau

Twenty teams, two gyms and two buildings full of charity cheer.

Dodgeballs lined up on the center line, players wearing their jingle bells, elf hats and holiday sweaters rush towards the balls to begin the battle. With each dodge and throw of the ball, they are reminded of how grateful they are to have this opportunity to play, let alone raise money, for such a great cause.

On Dec. 9, the Surrey Dodgeball League hosted its second annual Christmas Charity Tournament at William of Orange and Forsyth Elementary. At the event, all participants had to wear holiday-themed ‘uniforms’ ranging from Santa hats, ugly sweaters, down to vibrant holiday socks.

Surrey Dodgeball is an adult league consisting of members of the Surrey community. In 2014, the league raised over $4,700 for the Surrey Christmas Bureau to help low-income families celebrate the holiday season.

This year, the entry fee for the tournament, plus collections from the community and local businesses, along with personal contributions raised $8,357. All money raised will be contributed to the Surrey Christmas Bureau.

This year’s MVP (Most Valuable Donator) honours were awarded to Joel Raun for raising $700 worth of items and to volunteer  Ryan Demelo who raised $4,240.

The Surrey Dodgeball League was established in 2013 and encompasses individuals from the Surrey community that are passionate about athletics and the dodge. For more information about the league and their upcoming schedule of events, visit: Surreydodgeball.ca.
