Surrey Eagles deal for two sets of twins

BCHL champions continue to restock roster by adding Jonah and Nathan Renouf and Eric and Patrick Chore from Ontario's Oakville Blades.

Surrey Eagles deal for two sets of twins

Surrey Eagles’ new head coach Peter Schaefer is going to have a heck of a time figuring out who’s who in the dressing room next season after the team acquired not one, but two sets of twins from Ontario.

On Monday, the BC Hockey League team announced it had acquired 1994-born forwards Jonah and Nathan Renouf, as well as 20-year-olds Patrick and Eric Chore from the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. In exchange, Surrey has sent backup goaltender Glenn Ferguson – who was injured for much of last season – to Oakville, along with the playing rights to a trio of players, goalie Michael Santaguida, Michael Stenerson and Devon Toews, all of whom are planning to play NCAA hockey next season.

“We’ve lost some forwards from last year’s team to NCAA schools, so we’re excited to be acquiring some great skill guys who have put up great numbers in Ontario,” said Eagles general manager and head coach Peter Schaefer. “We hope they’ll help out our power play as well.”

With the Eagles losing so many players from last year’s BCHL title squad to graduation, the Renouf brothers should go a long way to filling the void.

Jonah Renouf finished second in OJHL scoring last season with 29 goals and 65 assists in just 53 games, while Nathan was sixth with 21 goals and 56 assists. Both are set to attend Quinnipiac University in 2014/15.

The trade means a return to B.C. for the Kelowna-raised Chore twins, both of whom had stints in the BCHL before heading to Ontario.

On Tuesday, the Eagles made one more roster move, shipping 1994-born forward Stephan Burzan to the Victoria Grizzlies in exchange for six-foot-five defenceman Kade Pilton, 18.
