Point guard Emma Jones will bring her back court talents to the UBC Okanagan women’s basketball team for the 2016-17 Canada West season.
The 5-foot-6 Jonas stars for Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary where last year she was chosen an all-star at the Surrey Fire Fighters tournament, as well as being named her team’s most dedicated player.
Jonas also recorded a 30-point game, including five three-pointers.
Jonas has played two seasons with provincials programs, recently helping B.C. to a fourth-place finish at the U17 nationals in Edmonton.
The soon-to-be Heat student-athlete said UBC’s Okanagan campus should be the right fit for her.
“I am planning to apply to the fine arts program at UBCO,” said Jonas. “Academically, UBCO is one of the best universities in Canada so the decision was easy. It also helped that I loved the campus and the team.”
On the court, Jonas looks forward to making a contribution to the Heat as soon as possible.
“One of my strengths is my work ethic, I always give it 100 per cent when I’m on the floor. Also, I definitely consider myself to be a scoring point guard. I will take my fair share of shots, but I also see the floor well.
“I hope to bring overall intensity to the team next year. I want to work hard and make good decisions as a point guard.”
Jonas is one of two recruits Claire Meadows has already locked down for her Heat program. The first-year coach has also solidified her front court with the addition of Vernon Secondary’s six-foot forward Jordyn Cullum.
