Runners from across Surrey laced up at the prestigious Boston Marathon Monday, with a handful of runners finishing high within their respective age divisions.
The fastest finisher among the local contingent was South Surrey’s Keith Parks, who finished the 42.2-km run in a time of three hours, 27 minutes and 15 seconds, which was just a few seconds quicker than Surrey’s Laura McDonald, who crossed the finish just in 3:27:43.
Surrey resident Dave Hobbs, 60, was just behind them, finishing in 3:28:33 – a time that was quick enough to place him 54th overall in his age division.
Other Surrey runners will top age-division finishes were Gayle Robinson, 68, who was 37th in her age group; and Lynne Spence, 69, who clocked a time of 4:38:01 to finish 41th in her division.
Other locals to compete in the prestigious race were Peter Schrauwen (3:40:57), Cheryl Lindsay (3:44:02), South Surrey’s Jackie Davidson (3:49:24), Rob Watanabe (3:50:13), Brian Joel (3:52:29), Christine Callaghan (4:20:50), Christina Ego (4:27:58), Xiaohu Zhang (4:57:54), South Surrey’s Ray Baker (5:01:46), and Susi Hobbs (5:44:57).
In total, 30,741 runners participated in the marathon, which was swept by a trio of Ethiopian runners – Lemi Berhanu Hayle was first, with a blistering time of 2:12:45, while Lelisa Desisa was second and Yeman Adhane Tsegay finished second and third, respectively.
