Surrey sends competitors to 2016 Canada 55+ Games

Eight local athletes are competing in curling, table tennis and more as part of Team B.C. at the Games (Aug. 16-19)

Eight athletes from Surrey are in Brampton, Ontario, this week for the 2016 Canada 55+ Games.

They’re joining 1,700 participants representing 11 provinces and territories for four days  of national celebration of sport, culture and social well being Aug. 16 to 19.

Twenty-two sports and activities are featured at the Canada 55+ Games.

The event is intended to promote wellness and spiritual, mental and physical well-being.

The Surrey competitors are taking part in curling, table tennis, lawn bowling  and swimming events as part of Team British Columbia, the BC Seniors Games Society said.

The Surrey athletes are (in alphabetical order):

Ross Anderson, 69, who will be competing in Ice Curling (mens 65+)

Susan Beuk, 66, Ice Curling (women 55+)

Carolyn Chu, 60, Ice Curling (women 55+)

Wonk-K Kim, 76, Table Tennis (singles and men’s doubles)

Rick Lambert, 71, Lawn Bowling

Karen Lepine, 64, Ice Curling (women 55+)

Lorane Martin, 59, Lawn Bowling

R. Kerby Young, 65, 8 Ball (men single 55+)

This year’s event marks the 20th anniversary of the Canada 55+ Games. They were first held in Regina in 1996.

Today, more than 10,000 Canadians actively participate in local events leading up to the national games.

The 2016 55+ BC Games are Sept. 20-24 in Coquitlam.
