The Vernon Sunshine Autographics Swag lived up to their name, uncovering Junior B gold at the Burnaby Icebreaker Ringette Tournament last weekend on the Lower Mainland.
The team went 4-0 in round-robin play, opening with a 7-2 win against Vernon #2.
Alana Fox paced the Swag with a hat trick, Dayna Hanley scored twice and Sydnee Harder and Kennedy Pope each buried singles. Paige Webster supplied three assists and Brenna Beck had two.
Fox fired 5+1 and Harder had 2+1 as Vernon downed Delta 9-3. Other offence came from Bailey Williamson (1+2) and Hanley.
The Swag used four goals from Fox and a goal and assist each from Hanley and Beck to brush back Northwest Vancouver 6-1.
Vernon then bounced Burnaby twice with identical 7-2 scores, once to complete the round-robin, and again in the semifinals.
In the gold-medal game, Fox collected the hat trick, Harder delivered 1+2 and Hanley and Webster added singles as the Swag outlasted Vernon #2 6-2.
Replying for Vernon #2 were Taryn Smith and Riley Martian. Shelby Fisher had two helpers.
“Our defence of the blondes – Liv Percy and Kim Wilson – and the brunettes – Kendra Racine and Kennedy Pope – are our heart and soul and most things we do run through their stellar defence and the goaltending of Emily Olds,” said coach Ryan Williamson.
In Tween B Icebreaker action, the Vernon Newalta Rush went undefeated in six games to also earn gold in Burnaby.
Defenceman Katelyn Paulin had a standout tournament for the Rush, who got great goaltending from injured Garrett Adams. Playing a solid team game all weekend, the hard-working Rush got great performances by Caleb Pope, Saige Woodliffe, Hannah Popilchak and Kendra Ostafie.
The Vernon Advertising Works Thunder Cats went 4-0-1 in Petite play in the Burnaby, starting with a 6-6 draw against Shuswap Ring of Fire.
The Thunder Cats got two goals apiece from Alyssa Carter and Abygayle Williamson, and Hailey Quiring and MacKenzie Munroe each had one. Madison Fox had three assists.
Williamson turned the hat trick as the advertising crew clipped Port Coquitlam #1 8-4.
Munroe, with 2+1, Ellen Campbell, with a deuce, and a single by Fox completed the offence. Carter had three assists and Jillian Pipke, Quiring and Emma Carter each had one.
Facing the Northwest Vancouver Firebolts, the Thunder Cats exploded for 15 second-half goals to earn a17-3 win.
Brooke Buller had a hat trick and Pipke scored her first goal of the tournament in a game where every Vernon player recorded at least one point.
Buller was then stellar in net as the Advertising Works squad grounded the Surrey Spitfires 7-2.
Williamson led the scoring with a pair of goals, with singles coming from Campbell, Pipke, Chelsea McNabb and Emma Carter.
Williamson delivered 2+2 and Alyssa Carter had 2+1 as the Thunder Cats ended the tourney with a 10-3 win over PoCo #2.
In Novice action, the Vernon North Enderby Timber Flames went 4-1 in the Icebreaker, recording 49 goals for and just 24 against.
The whole team played hard and contributed on offence: Kenzie Koshure (11+3), Grace Cornell (7+5), Emma Lochhead (5+5), Georgia Lannon (7+1), Levi Knopf (6+2), Kaila Summerfelt (2+5), Julie Francis (6G), Ashly Shwaluk (2+2), Danika Bellamy (2+2), Jessie Campbell (1+2) and Katie Finlayson (3A).
In local Bunny play, Vernon’s teams battled Kelowna Saturday.
In the first game, the Shooting Stars got offence from Mackenzie Gilman, Brooklynn Young, Paige Edgar and Amber Lowe, and great defence from Makenna Hamilton-Jackson, Kyla Pyle, Astrid Beaty, Jordan Tung, Brooklyn Tardiff-Mitchell and Taliya Yamoka.
In the second game, Vernon #2 goals were scored by Miah Cohen-Wargovcsik, Brooklyn Young, Edgar and Gilman. Great game skill was displayed by Brooklyn Charest, Jordan Scott, Shaila and Sasha Austin, Kate Mallow, Taliya Yamoka, Jaida Sauvie and Emily Balcaen.
The Thompson/Okanagan Junior AA used 2+1 performances by Alyx Rudderham and Riley Pickrell to earn a 9-1 win over the Kelowna/Westside Belle A team Sunday at Priest Valley Arena.
Robyn Slamka, Teigan Moore, Courtney Oye, Taigan Radomski and Kianna Pak rounded out the offence. Erin Banning had two assists in front of goalie Tara MacMillan.
