The comeback continues for Kirsten Sweetland.
Last week she finished sixth place in an ITU World Triathlon Cup race and today (July 14) she was fifth at the ITU World Triathlon Cup race in Palamos, Spain.
A new workout regime and approach to training has so far led to a more durable Sweetland. The 24-year-old hasn’t raced consistently for five seasons due to various injuries.
American Katie Hursey took first among the elite women at Palamos, a $7,500 prize (U.S.) with a time of two hours, one minute and 19 seconds. Sweetland’s time was 2:02:52.
The next Canadian was Amelie Kretz with a time of 2:03:59. Kretz recently defeated Sweetland at the Edmonton ITU, a sign that Sweetland is improving as the season moves on.
Canada also placed fifth in the men’s race, with Victoria-trained Kyle Jones doing the Olympic distance in 1:49:03, four spots and 13 seconds back of the winner, Great Britain’s Mark Buckingham.
Canadian Reid Taylor was 59th with a time of 2:00:26.
