Swimming to new records

The Shuswap Swimming Team watched three team records fall at Sunday’s third annual Shuswap Swimming Team Winter Jamboree Swim Meet

Continuing to pick up speed, the Shuswap Swimming Team watched three team records fall at Sunday’s third annual Shuswap Swimming Team Winter Jamboree Swim Meet at the SASCU Recreation Centre.

Sixteen local athletes were among the 60 swimmers from Salmon Arm, Kamloops and Vernon who attended to gain more competitive experience in a fun and easy-going environment.

• Eight and under girls – Lauren Gridley-Haack was the lone competitor, earning first in the 50-metre backstroke, 50-m breaststroke and 400-m freestyle.

•  Nine- to 10-year-old girls – Carrie Fromme won both the 50-m backstroke and 50-m breaststroke. Sandra Hall won the 200-m backstroke, while Jenna Tiedeman won the 50-m butterfly and broke the team record in the 400-m freestyle. Both Hall and Tiedeman will advance to the invitational level of competition. Teammate Molly Fogarty placed second in the 100-m butterfly and Miya Coutlee earned second in the 100-m individual medley.

• 10 and under girls relay – the team of Fogarty, Hall, Fromme and Tiedeman finished third in the 4×50-m freestyle.

• 11- to 12-year-old girls – Lizzy Collins finished fourth in the 50-m breaststroke at her first competitive race.

• 13 and older girls – Holly Anhel won the 200-m individual medley, 50-m backstroke and 50-m breaststroke races, while teammate Kailey Konotopsky took top spot in the 200-m backstroke, 50-m butterfly and 50-m freestyle.

• 11 and older girls relay – Collins, Anhel, Coutlee and Konotopsky placed third in the 4 x 50-m freestyle.

• 10 and under boys – Jacob Rambo had a strong meet, winning the 200-m backstroke, 200-m breaststroke and 50-m freestyle. Ethan Fleming won the 200-m individual medley, advancing to the invitational level of competition. Teammate Garret Wasylenki also took top spot, winning the 50-m butterfly and establishing a new team record. Landon Quilty won his heat in his first competitive race and earned 10th in the 50-m freestyle.

• 10 and under boys relay – the team of Rambo, Wasylenki, Quilty and Fleming earned second place in the 4 x 50-m freestyle relay.

• 11- to 12-year-old boys – Nico Anhel won both the 100-m individual medley and the 50-m breaststroke, while teammate Richard Jurasek finished second in both the 50-m backstroke and 50-m butterfly at his first competitive race.

• 13 and older boys – also at his first race, Jesee Page won first in the 100-m individual medley, 50-m backstroke, 200-m breaststroke and 50-m freestyle.

This weekend the Shuswap Swimming Team heads to Kelowna for the Kelowna Snowfest Invitational Swim Meet. Registration continues for anyone interested in joining the team while spaces are available. Call 250-804-2006.
