Seven Surrey residents are in Calgary this week, competing at Synchro Canada’s National Qualifier Championships.
More than 700 athletes are at the event, the local swimmers participating as part of BC Aquasonics synchronized swimming teams.
Erin Williams is one of three Aquasonics among the Senior National Stream swimmers in Calgary for the March 20-24 event, and will contest the Senior Solo, Junior/Senior Combo and Senior Team Routine categories, while Natasha Heine is in the Junior/Senior combo, Senior Duet and Senior Team Routine groups. Joanna Moraes will swim in Junior Fina Solo.
The four local swimmers in the 13-15 National Stream group are Courtney Armstrong, Jessica Friesen, Madyson Stickley and Nancy Zhang, and all four will compete in the Team Routine. Stickley will also be in the Duet competition.
“Our athletes have been training extremely h ard since August preparing for this competition,” said BC Aquasonics head coach Susan Kemper. “In this sport we train 15 to 25 hours a week at the high performance level. These athletes need incredible mental focus to bring that training into competition just a few times a year. The girls are ready and, after their results at the BC Provincials, we have high expectations for this competition.”
