The Williams Lake Midget Female Timberwolves picked up two wins and a loss in Penticton during the weekend to win the regular season championship in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association.
The T-wolves started off their weekend with a 1-0 loss Saturday morning, despite dominating the game in shots, 35-15.
“The girls could not get a bounce and the goals wouldn’t come,” Timberwolves head coach Roy Call said.
Saturday, Williams Lake had a bounce back game with a 2-1 victory, followed by a one-sided 4-1 win Sunday morning.
The win Sunday gave the Timberwolves an 11-win, three-loss and one tie record in OMAHA play.
“[We] do not participate in the OMAHA playoffs,” Call said. “As [we are] a guest team from outside the zone we are ineligible. We do, however, have a bye to the provincial championship tournament in Parksville in March.”
The team led several statistical categories in the league, however, Call said the one that made the team’s success possible every week was goals against.
“In the 15 regular season games the girls surrendered only 15 goals against,” Call said. “The team’s goaltenders, Tamara William and Rachel Cross, have been excellent all season, but surrendering only one goal per game is an indication of the efforts of the entire 19 players on the roster.”
Call said that attention to detail has helped the team qualify for the finals of each of the five tournaments they have attended to date, being crowned champions in two of those tournaments.
“The girls continue to fine tune their game in preparation for the provincials with a full schedule,” Call said.
The T-wolves will be back in action this weekend at the Surrey Superheart Tournament where they will attempt to defend their 2016 title.
The team also recently announced the winner of its annual raffle, Wendy Jorgansen of 100 Mile House, who will attend two games in Montreal that will see the Canadiens and Carey Price take on the Edmonton Oilers and the Washington Capitals this weekend.
Call thanked the team’s raffle sponsors, Caribou Ski Source for Sports owner Tom Wong and Price for their support.
“They have been on board with us from day one of the female rep program,” Call said. “This year Tom and Carey worked with us to put together our best trip yet … [Jorgansen] will be attending with her son, a huge Habs fan, and they are really excited to meet Carey and enjoy the hockey.”
