The Vernon Brewers Sports Tanks bowed 7-6 to the Kelowna Kaos in Sunday’s final of the 12-team Kelowna Women’s Fastball Tournament at Mission Sports Fields.

The Tanks, coached by Scott Flood, were up 6-5 when the Kaos used a lead-off single and a couple of bunts and passed balls for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“The girls played some great ball for six games in a pretty competitive tournament,” said Flood.

Cassie Marshall went the first four innings on the hill before being relieved by Sara Wallis. Centre fielder Tara Joe was 3-for-4, while second baseman Bianca Dewitt was 2-for4 with two RBI.

First baseman Ashley Flood smacked a two-run single in the first inning and then badly twisted her ankle sliding home, in the same inning.

Vernon ambushed the North Vancouver Blue Jays 11-1 in the semifinals with Joe making an awesome diving catch in centre field.

Shortstop Taylor Weixl and Flood each homered as the Tanks toppled the Vancouver Impact 9-7 in two extra innings, in the quarters.

In preliminary games, the Tanks doubled the Field of Dreams 10-5, mauled the Maple Ridge Nemesis 11-4 and smothered Abbotsford Rage Conspiracy 14-2.

The core of the team was coached by Flood in 2009 when they won the provincial Midget title.

They play in the Kelowna Women’s League.

Catcher Kristin Limbris, second baseman Leah Schaefer, outfielders Eva Wiens and Coola Lewis and utility players Kaylie Herrewynen and Danielle Saddleman round out the Tanks’ tournament roster.
