Corbin Taylor, a member of Quesnel Youth Bowling, returned from the provincial playoff in Kamloops as the five-pin kingpin among boys aged 8 – 11 years old.
At the provincials, Taylor finished the competition with a total score of 748 pins knocked down, 23 pins better than Jordan McCormick of Vancouver and 24 better than Alex Wright of Kamloops, who finished second and third respectively.
Despite his obvious skill at five-pin bowling, Taylor did admit to being nervous in the early goings, but the nerves dissipated after a couple of matches.
“”I was nervous, but I was okay by the second game,” Taylor said.
In all, Taylor bowled five games and not knowing where he stood in the competition until the end also proved to be a challenge.
“Waiting for the results, that was difficult,” he said.
“You never know until the end.”
With the provincial title tucked neatly into his back pocket, Taylor is practicing for the national championships.
In addition to his technique and making sure he leaves as few open frames as possible, Taylor conceded he is also focusing on one particular aspect of his game.
“I’m working on going slower than I normally do,” he admitted with a sheepish grin.
When asked about his chances of doing well at the national championships, Taylor had obviously sized up the competition.
“I think I have a 50-50 shot,” a confident Taylor said of his chances.
“I’m a little bit worried about the bowlers from Alberta.”
The national Youth for Bowling championships are slated for Regina, Sask, May 6 – 10.
