The 100 Mile Curling Club is really hopping at this time of year. In addition to the regular weekly league and drop-in play, January is a very busy month with volunteers working hard to organize the coming events.

The 12 team Mixed League is a close race with Team Menzer in first place with 19 points. Team Hamilton is second with 18 points and there is a tie for third place with the Team Ney and Team Green both having 15 points.

The Men’s League has eight teams and is being led by the Team Mitchell who has 16 points. Second place is Team Sikiric with 15 points. The Team Ney is in third place with 14 points.

This year the Ladies’ League has eight teams and it is once again a very close race with a tie for first place between Teams Doddridge and Menzer who both have 15 points. Hamilton is in second with 14 points and the Team Grenzer in third place with 12 points.

The Ladies’ League held their annual Christmas party on Dec. 20 where everyone brought a dish and a donation to the 100 Mile Women’s Shelter. The donations collected filled a van and the shelter was very appreciative.

The new Doubles League is played twice a month and is great fun.

The Curling Club decided to start this league off with fewer games in a year to judge if there was enough interest from the curlers. Even though 100 Mile is a fairly small town compared to other curling centres, we are doing very well in attracting curlers to this league with eight teams.

There is currently a tie for first place with between the L. Peterson/Vinson and Folk teams having nine points each. Second place is Team Hamilton with seven points. Team Dall is in third place with six points.

Juniors play at 3:30 every Tuesday and we have 20 juniors this year. Volunteer coaches teach the kids every aspect and technique of curling from throwing and sweeping to skipping and strategy. They also play games against each other to get the experience of the game.

Drop-in curling is going strong on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., as well as on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. where coaches are provided for learn-to-curl and improving your game.

In addition to the regular curling, the club is hosting the 2019 Blind Curling Provincial Playdowns on Jan. 11 and 12. Draws are on Friday at 9:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. and on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. In addition, the Northern Senior Women’s Zone 5/6 Playdowns are being held the same weekend. 100 Mile House has a team entered in both competitions.

The 60th Anniversary of the Men’s Bonspiel is on Jan. 18 to 20, starting on Friday night where snacks will be provided. On Saturday night there will be dinner and music as well as curling games after dinner. Semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday. Cash prizes are given for every win and the winner of each of the A, B and C events also receive team jackets sponsored by McNeil and Sons Logging Ltd., Performance All Terrain and Rentals and Timber Mart Ltd. respectively.

The ladies do the work for the Men’s Bonspiel and, in turn, the men work for the Ladies’ Bonspiel which is being held on March 1 to 3.
