Telemark shines on Star

Silver Star hosted Canada West Telemark Skiing Championships last weekend.

Those trademark Telemark turns were on display last weekend as Silver Star Mountain Resort hosted the Canada West Championships.

The event, organized by the B.C. Telemark Ski Association and Telemark Ski Canada, brought racers of all experience levels together to compete in their respective categories.

Competition opened Saturday with the GS, where racers skied through gates and over a jump. On Sunday, it was the traditional sprint classic, with competitors racing through gates, over a jump, into another set of gates, and around a large berm before skate skiing to the finish.

“Competitor turnout was positive and those who competed seemed to have a great time and there is already talk of return,” said Shane Landreville, president of B.C. Telemark, and also a competitor in the event.

“This is a growth year for B.C. Telemark and the more awareness and exposure, the stronger the sport will become. Silver Star Mountain Resort was extremely positive and a perfect host resort for this event.”

In the GS, division winners were: Junior women, Farli Boden, Idaho; Junior men, Lucas Viebahn Vernon; Senior women, Carol Salzman, Kelowna; Senior men, Olivier Petit, Vernon; Masters men, Tim Boden, Idaho.

Category winners in the sprint classic were: Junior women, Farli Boden; Junior men, Viebahn; Senior women, Salzman; Senior men, Landreville, Revelskoke; and Masters men, Tim Boden.

“All competitors came out and gave their best, some who have only been telemark skiing for months,” said Landreville. “This is a very inclusive sport and true to the camaraderie of telemark skiing.”
