For the third year in a row the Terrace team Out For A Rip took first-place in the Skeena River Relay.
The 16th annual relay, held on Saturday, June 3, saw 30 teams hit the pavement starting at 7 a.m. at the Lester Centre in Prince Rupert and completing the 10th stage and 142 km at Canadian Tire in Terrace.
The unofficial race results state that Out For A Rip completed the race in 10:22:38, with Kitimat Bastards taking second with a total time of 11:02:50, and third place went to Give ‘Er on the River with 11:07:37.
By category, the top mixed team was Out For a Rip. Top open team was Kitimat Bastards with a time of 11:02:50. Top women’s team was Transcend Fitness with 12:34:16. Top corporate team was Agony of Defeet with 12:53:54. Top masters team was Rupert Relics, who finished at 13:57:40.
Throughout the day, there were some incredible race times from the men and women claimed the top spot — and the special towel — for their stage category. Stage 3 is the longest leg with 21.2 km of pavement to cover. The fastest female was Johanna Wick, from team Agony of Defeet, who crushed her stage in 1:29:05, and fastest man was Michael Jordan, who completed the stretch in 1:21:41.
Judson Rowse ran two stages for his team, Beaver Fever, and took the title of fastest male for Stage 2 where he ran 13km in 55:18 minutes. He followed that with Stage 3 and 21.2km with an impressive time of 1:26:44.
The weather was cooperative, with cloud cover and mild temperatures. Race directors Carrie Coley, Amber Sheasgreen and Charlene Hamilton pulled off another successful relay with the help of dozens of volunteers at every station. Without their dedication and energy the race wouldn’t have been the success it was.
