A re–formatted grouping didn’t mean much to the oldest group on the floor as The Dino’s wound up taking the Kwalikum Secondary School Alumni Basketball title for the second year in a row.

The tournament took place Dec. 20-21 and saw a number of KSS alumni testing their skills on the hardwood. The Dino’s (formerly Champs not Chumps who graduated in 2002 or earlier) had a small roster but managed to overcome, rolling to a 3–0 record in pool play to earn a berth in the final.

Also earning a berth in the final were Bobby’s Kids (2003–06 graduating class) who went 3–0 in pool play as well.

Saturday also saw the current senior girls take on a group of alumni girls as well, with the senior girls team pulling off a squeaker of a victory.

The final was a defensive battle for the first few minutes as both teams couldn’t manage to put the ball in the hoop but it was alumni MVP Taylor Wilson who got the scoring started for the Dinos on Saturday night and he managed to keep up the excellent play, scoring some tough points at times for his squad.

After the event, KSS athletic director Butch Gayton had some thanks to deliver and a bit of praise as well.

“It was a nice event again for us this year. This one had a bit more meaning behind it as we had the function on Friday night at the Art Worx Gallery in town, which was a big success,” Gaytn said.

“We raised some money for the senior teams going on their trip down to San Diego and all had a good time.”

“Of course, this whole thing wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of young Kevin Frampton, who took it upon himself to organize the teams and schedules for them, putting it all together and rounding up whoever he could. It was a really good weekend and we’re hoping for much of the same next year.”
