Things get extreme at Rossland’s 8th annual Huck’en Berries Bike Jam

One young rider went to extreme measures to cinch lamest trick at the eighth annual Huck’en Berries Bike Jam at Centennial Park on Saturday.

Kian Merringer put forth a “bare” minimum effort to claim the prize for lamest trick, but showed off his moves earlier in the afternoon, landing third place for the juniors. “My brother told me to do it,” Merringer said of his daring move.

This is the third year the event was sanctioned by the Freeride Mountain Bike Association (FMBA), and as always it took a team of volunteers to make it happen.

“There were about 20 [volunteers], but then there were people that just kind of came out of the woodwork and because Rossland is awesome they just kind of said ‘Do you need any help?’” said Rory Belter, organizer for the event.

On top of the fantastic tricks, the event featured a BBQ put on by the Rossland Rotary, as well as a beer garden. Those who didn’t get a chance to check it out this year can look forward to the ninth annual Huck’en Berries, as Belter said he intends to keep the event going as long as there’s interest from the community.

“I think the city wants it and they like it, so we’ll keep it going, and if the riders keep liking it, then we’ll keep doing it,” said Belter.
