It’s go time as the Camosun Chargers women’s volleyball teams open the 2015 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship today in Longueuil, Que,  versus the Grand Prairie Wolves at 3 p.m. PST.

The tournament runs through Saturday (March 14). Chargers coach Chris Dahl was named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year for leading the Chargers to a 21-3 regular season record in the PacWest. The Chargers fell to the V.I. Mariners in the provincial final, winning silver.

The PacWest champion Chargers men face their host today, Holland College, at the Men’s National Championships in Charlottetown, PEI.

Here in town, tomorrow (March 14) will be a busy day at the UVic field hockey turf. The Vancouver Island Women’s Field Hockey League opens the day with the Patriots and the Mariners at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Flickers and Lynx 1 at 11 a.m. and the Cardinals and Lynx 2 at 12:30 p.m. The Stellers and Ravens play at 2 p.m., with the Kestrels and Renegades at 3:30 p.m., and the Pirates and Demons ending the day off at 5 p.m. Just two games hit the turf Sunday: the Sailors and Blue Jays play at 9 a.m., with the Kestrels and Ravens at 3:30 p.m.

Several men’s games will also take the field Sunday, March 15. The Hawks and Marauders start the morning at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mutineers and Oak Bay at 12 p.m. Finally, the Tigers and Rebels end the day with their 1:30 p.m. game.

The boys of summer are back in action at Lambrick Park this coming week as the Victoria Eagles baseball club welcomes the Calgary Blues for the second annual March friendly tournament, March 20 to 22.

The Victoria Eagles premier squad will start the tournament playing the Eagles AAA team at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Victoria Mariners playing Calgary 2 at 2:30 p.m. The Mariners face Calgary 1 at 5 p.m. while the Eagles premier squad finishes the day versus Calgary 1 at 5 p.m.

Saturday, march 21 will see the junior premier Eagles play the Eagles AAA team at 12 p.m., before taking on Calgary 2 at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles AAA team finishes the day against Calgary 2 at 5 p.m.

The final day of the tournament pits the Eagles AAA against Calgary 2 at 9:30 p.m., while the Eagles junior premiers face Calgary 1 at 12 p.m. and Calgary 1 plays the Parksville Royals at 2:30 p.m. before the tournament concludes on an Island note with the Royals and premier Eagles playing at 5 p.m. All games are played at Lambrick Park in Gordon Head.

Get involved with the other side of baseball at the 2015 BC Baseball umpiring clinics. Level 1 umpiring course runs March 23 and 25 at 7 p.m. and March 26 and April 2 at 6 p.m., at Central Middle School. The day-long Level 2 umpiring course will be held March 28 at 8:30 a.m. at Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence.

On campus, the UVic Vikes premier men’s rugby team visits the Vancouver Rowing Club on Saturday, while the premier women Velox Valkyries host Bayside, 11: 30 a.m. at Velox. The Velox Valhallians, currently the Island’s top Div. 1 men’s side, play the UVic Saxons at 1 p.m., Wallace Field.

Meanwhile the Saanich Junior Braves are looking ahead to next year with open prospect tryouts in June for players born from 1996 to 2000. The Braves’ junior development camp runs select days March 25 to May 29. Visit saanichbraves.ca for more.

On Saturday, April 11, all four Capital Region minor lacrosse associations, including the Saanich Tigers, will participate in a 12-hour game of lacrosse as a fundraiser for the BC Cancer Foundation, at The Q Centre in Colwood.
