Three Glacier Kings receive VIJHL awards

Yetis open second-round playoffs series with Peninsula on March 4 at Comox Valley Sports Centre

Several Comox Valley Glacier Kings are included in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s list of 2013-14 award winners.

Michael Hails earned the Ray’s Sports Centre Trophy as Top Goaltender, Duncan Pernal received the Jamie Robertson Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship and Ability, and Nick Tupper was the Glacier Kings’ recipient of the Bob Saunders Community Leadership Award.

Brendan deVries of the Campbell River Storm received the Jamie Benn Trophy for Most Valuable Player and Doug Morton Trophy as Regular Season Leading Scorer. He was a co-winner of the Brian Harrison Award for Top Forward along with Alex Milligan of the Peninsula Panthers.

The Jack Kingston Memorial Trophy for Top Defenceman went to Graham Zagrodney of Victoria Cougars. The Walt MacWilliams Memorial Trophy for  Unsung Hero went to Mark Walton of Victoria. The Larry Lamoureaux Trophy for Rookie of the Year went to Tate Coughlin of Peninsula.

The Eddie ‘The Storm’ Kingston Award for Coach of the Year went to Brian Passmore of Peninsula. Jeff Longpre of the Saanich Braves won the Chek 6 King and Haysom Award as Broadcaster of the Year.

Other Ccommunity Leadership Awards went to Brayden Taekema (Campbell River), Leighton Williams (Kerry Park), Jackson Skerratt (Peninsula), Liam Sproute (Saanich), Kayle Ramsay (Westshore), Travis Flug (Oceanside) and David Osborne (Nanaimo).

Victoria won the Andy Hebenton Trophy as Regular Season League Champion and the Grant Peart Memorial Trophy as Most Disciplined Team.

The Glacier Kings open their second-round best-of-seven playoff series with the Panthers on Tuesday, March 4 in Courtenay, with game time 7 p.m. at Comox Valley Sports Centre #1.

Game 2 goes March 7 in Peninsula, Game 3 March 8 in Courtenay (7:30 p.m.) and Game 4 March 10 in Peninsula.
