Three Mission softball players will try to impress scouts and college coaches at the Adidas Futures National Tournament in St. George Utah next week (July 17-21).
Haley Borchert, Shelby McNeill and Julia Harris play at a high level of fastball all year and will be competing in the B.C. provincial tournament this weekend before heading south on Monday for the tournament.
Exhibition games begin the same evening, and the tournament begins on Wednesday. The trio will be playing with more than 500 other athletes, 14-18 years old, from across North America who are unsigned and uncommitted. In addition to competing for tournament title, players could also earn a scholarship.
Borschert and McNeill recently graduated from Mission Secondary School and are members of the Abbotsford OUtlaws ’94B Rep girls team. Harris, who will be entering Grade 10 at MSS in September, plays with the Fraser Valley Fusion ’97A Rep girls team.
The Adidas Futures program started as an elite camp in 2006 where athletes could showcase their talent in front of college scouts. Many camp alumni are now at four colleges on softball scholarships as a result of the program.
