The Spectrum Thunder are looking for back-to-back wins as they host the Howe Sound Sounders at Spectrum, 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

That night is also the Spectrum football dance and silent auction, from 7 p.m. until midnight.

The Thunder are coming off a massive win for the program, as they defeated the visiting defending B.C. High School Football champion Earl Marriott Mariners 10-9 in an exhibition game on Friday.

Earl Marriott jumped to AAA this year after winning back-to-back provincial titles at the Tier II level.

Coach Darren Vaux credited both teams in the highly defensive contest.

“It was a defensive struggle. We were down 2-0 at the half having given up a safety early in the game, but our D held them,” Vaux said.

The win continues the Thunder’s steady ascension as a competitive football club, including two wins already this year at the Tier II level.

The game marked the return of two key Grade 12 running backs, Jake Burley and Oliver Adam.

“Burley made a big impact, he rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries. It was great for us,” Vaux said.

Adam left the game early, as he is still dealing with a nagging injury from the preseason.

Grade 10 quarterback Chris Starck led the attack for Spectrum, going 10-for-14, for close to 180 yards. Stack connected with receiver Riley Wilson for a touchdown.

Tight-end Carson Vaux was Starck’s most popular target with five catches for 70 yards.

Tickets for The Thunder football dance and silent auction are $10. Tickets are available at the door or through the Thunder Facebook page. Proceeds go to the team, which is fundraising for new uniforms.

It was a tough week for the Mount Douglas Rams junior and senior football teams. The junior Rams were blanked by Lord Tweedsmuir 29-0, while the senior squad was defeated by the South Delta Sun Devils 36-13.

Josh Lucas was a bright spot for the senior team with a touchdown on a 90-yard kick return.

The senior Rams are at Carson Graham on Friday.
