Tiebreaker delivers title to Parksville lawn bowlers

Three teams finish unbeaten in inaugural Todd Sjogren mixed doubles event at Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club

The Todd Sjogren Mixed Pairs lawn bowling tournament enjoyed a memorable debut last week, as a tiebreaker was needed to determine the champion after a tight, three-way finish at Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club.

When the dust had settled on the two-day event, three teams had all finished the round-robin format with unbeaten records.  The tourney drew 32 teams from the mid and north Island.

Sandi Mitchell and John Landsdowne of Parksville Lawn Bowling Club finished 4-0 and were awarded the title in a tiebreaker based on total number of ends won throughout the competition.

Carole Allen and Vern Greenhill of Courtenay settled for second place and Lynn Britz and Jim Muir of Parksville were third after also posting 4-0 records in match play.

Prizes were awarded to the top five place-winners. Qualicum’s team of Joyce and Bob Findlay was fourth with the mixed club team of Merry Danati and Ken Welwood of Parksville and Qualicum taking fifth spot.

“The success of this new tourney should ensure that it will become an annual event, thanks to the continued support of sponsors Todd Sjogren, investment advisor, and Glen McPherson of McPherson Group Realty; the hard work of QBLBC’s many volunteers; and its open tournament director, Mick Banks,” said Meryl Yates of QBLBC.

Yates also extended the club’s congratulates to Banks on his temporary appointment as coach/manager of the B.C. Provincial Bowls Team and wished the B.C. Team success at the national finals in Edmonton later this month.
