With a lacklustre effort at a tournament in Kamloops over Thanksgiving behind them, the Kelowna Fripp Warehousing Rockets have rebounded for a solid start to the Okanagan Mainline’s regular season.
The midget tier 1 Rockets pushed their league record to 3-0 with a pair of road victories over the weekend.
On Saturday in Kamloops, the Rockets downed the Lions 3-1. Lathan McKinney, Jordan Bautista and Jeran Knorr scored the goals, while Sam Bobyn was strong in net when needed, making three timely saves when the game was still in doubt.
On Sunday, Kelowna defeated Vernon 4-2.
Bautista continued his torrid scoring pace with two goals, while Ty Cridland and Clay Stephens chipped in singles. Brady Lenardon earned the win and made a couple of big saves to help preserve the win.
This weekend, the Rockets will travel to Prince George for two games with the midget Cougars.
Kamloops tournament
The Fripp Rockets started their 2013-2014 season with a less than impressive showing in the annual Kamloops Thanksgiving Weekend tournament. Going in as reigning champs, the turned in a 1-2-1 record, not nearly good enough to get them through to the semis. Kelowna started with a 7-2 victory over Ridge Meadows as game MVP Mitch Cobbett led the way with a pair of goals, and Sam Bobyn was in net for the win.
Next up was Hollyburn and, although Kelowna outshot the Huskies 37-6 they fell 2-1 due to spectacular goaltending from the Hollyburn goalie.
Next up was Prince George, the eventual tournament winners who defeated Kelowna 3-1, with an empty net goal.
Needing a win to get to the semis, the Rockets settled for a 3-3 tie with Victoria Racquet Club. Captain Brandon Barnes was the game MVP.
