Steve Higgs enjoyed winning a lacrosse game so much, he did it twice.
The senior B Nanaimo Timbermen forward played a true doubleheader on Sunday at Frank Crane Arena. In the afternoon he was offensive player of the game in a 20-6 playoff win against the Langley Warriors, then, an hour and a half later, he suited up for the senior A T-men and helped them to a 9-8 win over the Maple Ridge Burrards.
The senior A team was short a left-hander up front due to illness, so coach Kaleb Toth asked senior B general manager Shawn Swanson if any guys might be available.
“Anything to help out the Nanaimo lacrosse community; it’s been good to me,” said Higgs. “So of course I said yes and got in there and it was a lot of fun.”
He scored a goal in the night game, so, along with his two in the afternoon game, it added up to a rare kind of hat trick.
“He gave us a hell of an effort and worked real hard,” Toth said.
Higgs might have a chance to repeat the feat again sometime soon – the Presidents’ Cup national tournament sometimes involves two games in one day.
“It’s good training for that … for hopefully when we go there, which we will, I’m sure,” he said.
