Timbermen taking shape

General manager of Nanaimo's Western Lacrosse Association club announces four training-camp additions.

The Nanaimo Timbermen aren’t calling it a rebuilding year, but they’ll need, at the very least, some roster renovations.

With their top scorer, Scott Ranger, traded away, and another veteran, Kaleb Toth, moving behind the bench, the city’s Western Lacrosse Association team will have some changes at its core.

The T-men were already a young team and that will likely be the case again in 2013.

“The great thing about when you have young players is you have young legs and you tend to be really fast,” said Toth. “And I always find the most entertaining lacrosse to be a fast-paced game that has a lot of transition. Tough defence, but a lot of momentum goals.”

He said goals off of faceoffs and transition goals tend to be the ones that really excite a crowd, and he said he wants the Timbermen to be an entertaining team.

Toth said he liked what the Timbermen added in the draft last month. General manager Earl Nicholson selected mostly transition guys, and added two more in the Ranger trade.

Nicholson has also worked to add other players from around the country. Transition player Brad Mazzocato from Milton, Ont., who showed well at Washington Stealth training camp, will be at T-men camp next month. Defence/transition players Myles Dennett and Curtis Pridham from the Calgary Mountaineers will also report, as will left-handed Lee Davidson out of Nova Scotia.
