The Nanaimo Timbermen dropped down to last place on the weekend, and they know one of the reasons why: slow starts.

The Coastal Windows Timbermen (2-3-2) will continue to search for consistent 60-minute efforts this weekend as the senior A lacrosse team visits the Burnaby Lakers (3-5-1) on Friday (June 24) and then hosts the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Sunday.

The T-men tied the Lakers 11-11 this past Sunday at Frank Crane Arena. Nanaimo gave up the tying goal in the dying seconds of OT, but looking back, they know the first period, in which they scored just once, was a factor.

“We’ve got to start the first period off a lot better – that’s kind of been our downfall all year,” said Dylan Benard, transition player.

It’s true – the T-men have only outscored an opponent once in a first period this season. In first periods this year, Nanaimo has been outscored by a combined tally of 31-18. Not including first periods, Nanaimo has outscored opponents 53-38.

Team captain Scott Ranger said he can’t explain the team’s slow starts, but said preparation is a part of it.

“Guys have got to do their own thing to get ready for the game,” he said. “You can’t put it on anybody’s shoulders other than the guys that are in that dressing room.”

Benard said the Timbermen need to create their own momentum early in games.

“Everyone just playing as hard as they can for the first two minutes and getting the first goal,” he said.

GAME ON … Friday’s game in Burnaby is scheduled to be webcast live at www.theboxrocks.com starting at 7 p.m. … Sunday’s game at Frank Crane Arena is also a 7 p.m. start.
