The 2017 Edward Jones Tin Cup was the most successfull for the Penticton Curling Club.

While numbers were slightly less with teams, organizer Matt Tolley was pleased with the participation and several specatators attending.

“It was full,” said Tolley. “It’s a great bonspiel for fun, but for competition as well.”

Tolley received positive feedback from the players.

Tolley praised the club staff for maintaining great ice, allowing for play to be just as good.

The Tin Cup attracted more recreational teams as opposed to soley competitive rinks. Tolley said that makes it more fun. Tolley was happy to see a more level playing field over the weekend. There was a lot of camaraderie and people won good prizes.

“The calibre is good,” said Tolley.

The Tin Cup also attracted more beginner curlers as well as a junior team, featuring Keiji and Tane Kita and Owen Manning. Tolley said they did well reaching the quarter-final of the C side. The juniors won two games and Tolley said it is great to have younger players to develop.

Winning the Tin Cup was Steve Clement’s Summerland rink against Salmon Arm’s Darin Gerow. Winning the B side was Cy Gladish.

With the Penticton Curling Club hosting the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Tin Cup will be shifted to a different date.

Along with the Scotties, Tolley said the curling club will host a World Curling Tour men’s only event on Oct. 20. Tolley said they are putting it together from scratch so details are still being worked out.

“This is a very big deal,” said Tolley, who is hoping for a large prize purse.

According to the WCT website, the tour was developed from the World Curling Tour — Europe bringing a high potential for growth providing a premium product. Among the curlers on the tour are Brad Gushue, Kevin Koe, Rachel Homan and Jennifer Jones.
