Vernon Kal Tire had to work a little harder than expected in a 2-0 win over last-place Select Your Tickets in Tree Brewing Kelowna Men’s 35+ Soccer League action Thursday night at Rutland Sports Field.
The league-leading Tiremen (13-1-1) missed a few chances in a scoreless opening first half. Keeper Iain Butler turned away one Kelowna opportunity.
Kal Tire started to get their form early in the final 45 and finally broke through when Damian Adams found Jesse Knight on a throw in and Knight drew the defence and fed Glenn Allan ,who finished with a great low shot, his ninth of the year.
A few minutes later, Bryan Schenker took on the back line but hit his shot just over the cross bar. Unshaken, Schenker got the ball again about five minutes later and went around a defender to hit a short side shot off the keeper and in for insurance.
Butler kept his shutout and earned Kal Tire Man of the Match when he squashed a short shot. Next up for Kal Tire is Alves Bros. Thursday (6:30 p.m.) at Marshall Field #1. Select Your Tickets dipped to 2-11-1.
Meausette sizzles for Silver Stars
Former Vernonite Cory Meausette scored twice as the Silver Stars shelled Kal Tire 5-1 in a 55+ derby match Thursday night at Marshall #2.
The speedy and shifty Meausette, who was in town visiting buddy Kerry Zubot of the Stars, earned the Fountain Tire Man of the Match.
Geoff Greenwell, on a penalty shot, Mahmoud Abdel-Kader and Rob Ross also converted for the Stars (7-5), who got fabulous outings from central defender Steve Coombs and central midfielder Dick Markin.
Striker-turned-midfielder Kevin Mitchell took a feed from Gary Dill just outside the 18 and went top cheddar, bar down, through a maze to make it 3-1 early in the second half.
Moments later, Mitchell fed central midfielder and Wendy’s Man of the Match Jim Sparrow for a short breakaway but he was denied by keeper Dave Gould. Yogi Kongsdorf made several marvellous saves for the struggling Tiremen (6-4-2).
After a lopdsided loss last week, Sir Winston’s Attack rebounded for a 2-1 victory over the Fantastic Four in women’s Division 2 play Thursday night at Marshall #5.
Laurie Chickloski supplied both goals – one was a right-knee assist from Natalie Lussin and the other a hard drive into the back of the net off a lovely cross from Sam Orr.
Azra Cawley played a sweet first half up front as striker – with a few close calls for goals – and then she went back in net for the purple team and saved the close calls from the opposing pink squad.
Leggy Peggy Schepp brought her winning combination of skill, experience and leadership to the field – playing a bold match first as keeper and then on the defensive line.
Brianna Thalheimer was sorely missed last game – and the Attack was pleased to see her back as sweeper – her speed, strong kicks and ability to carry the ball up the field with ease, all make her a force.
The Fab Four got a fantastic goal by Delaney Ross and some amazing FIFA-level saves by Suzyn August, who returned from injury and faced at least 20 tough shots.
Great hustle in the middle came from Michelle Chabot and Kris Ponto.

Neudorf boosts Sistas past Rockets
The OTC/Sunterra Sistas grounded the Green Rockets 6-3 in other Division 2 play.
The Rockets scored at two minutes, but Sistas replied a few moments later as Andrea Zubot sent Diane Neudorf on a run through the back line and went top shelf.
Miranda Dalhuisen recieved the ball from Neudorf and then deked and dodged, looking to make another pass before unleashing a corker for the 2-1 lead.
Krista Gutknecht carried the ball down the wing and crossed it low to Carmen Kinniburgh, who tapped it in. Centerline narrowed it to 3-2 to end the half.
Neudorf scored early in the final half, but the Rockets answered right back.
Kinniburgh got her second of the night, then Dalhuisen sent Neudorf on another run and goal, for the hat trick. Becky Birbilis ran up for a corner and just missed with a header. The undefeated Sistas played a great passing game. Wendy Nadeau took the win in net.
