Tough course puts Lakers golf 15th at provincials

The Pen High Lakers golf team placed 15th at B.C. Golf AAA provincials

The Pen High Lakers placed 15 among 21 teams in the B.C. Golf AAA championship at Ledgeview Golf and Country Club in Abbotsford.

Walnut Grove Secondary won the championship by shooting eight over par, 42 better than St. George’s School, while the Lakers shot 110 over par over the two rounds.

“We played pretty well the first day,” said Lakers coach Robert Gunning, as the team shot 327, led by Declan Riddle’s 77. “(We) shot 344 the second day, a little more of a struggle. Difficult greens and some tight tee shots made for some bigger scores than the boys would have liked.”

Heming Sola of Summerland had the best round carding 79. Gunning said he hopes it was a good experience for the players.

“The more you get in those pressure situations, the more comfortable you become,” he added. “All five players are back next year so hopefully some of the lessons learned this week will help make for a successful season next year. Overall, it was a good golf season and I look forward to next season.”

Along with Riddle and Sola, the Lakers team at provincials featured Cam Davie, Jackson Coates and Jack McLennan.

Kelowna Secondary was 11th, while Vernon Secondary was 12th.
