Greater Victoria residents are invited to get a taste of one of the fastest growing sports sweeping across North America.
The Victoria Pickleball Association will be welcoming more than 100 competitors to their first tournament, running June 16 to 18 at Pearkes Recreation Centre field house.
“It’s a hybrid of table tennis, tennis and badminton. That’s probably the best way to describe it,” said Dennis Harrigan with the Victoria Pickleball Association.
He said players will be coming from across the Island as well as Vancouver and Port Angeles, Wash. to compete in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.
“It is the fastest growing sport in North America in the over-50 demographic,” said Harrigan. “We are growing by leaps and bounds – there are 150 in our association and we just started over a year ago.”
The tournament runs Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
He said the association regularly plays at Pearkes and Cedar Hill as well as recreation centres around the region. More information is available at victoriapickleball.org.
