THE TOWHEES DROPPED a tough overtime game to SMUS in Day One action of the B.C. championships.

The G.P. Vanier Towhees are 1-1 after two days of play at the B.C. Secondary School Rugby Union provincial championships.

After dropping their opening game 24-19 in overtime to St. Michael’s University School of Victoria on May 26, the Towhees blanked Claremont 47-0 in Day Two action on May 30.

That set up a meeting with Robert Bateman (Abbotsford) on Thursday, where a win would put Vanier into the game for ninth and 10th placings on the final day of the tourney, June 2.

The Towhees went into the 16-team tourney ranked #10 while SMUS was #7. The first day of the tourney was played at various locations, with the Towhees taking on SMUS at Brentwood College.

The scene shifted to Abbotsford on Wednesday, May 30 where the Towhees had no trouble with #15 Claremont of Victoria. The #6 Robert Bateman squad beat #14 Argyle 41-11 on May 30 to advance to face the Towhees.

Vanier’s opening day loss was a tough pill to swallow. The Courtenay crew had the lead late in the game only to have SMUS score a try and kick a difficult convert to send the game into sudden-death overtime (two five-minute halves). The Victoria side scored a try and did not need the conversion as they prevailed in the first OT period.
