The Vanier Towhees defeated the Alberni Armada 61-39 on Feb. 8 to improve to 4-0 atop the North-North Island League AAA senior boys basketball standings.

Alberni got down early and never recovered, although they tried hard to narrow the gap in the second half after trailing 46-11 at the break.

Dawson Casanave and Cam Hughes inserted great energy the entire game while the rest of the Towhees shared the playing time.

Hughes and Brad Gunter both scored 11 points while Mark McGinnis added nine to go along with eight each by Casanave and Dillon Robson. Gunter (9) and Casanave (8) led the rebounding while Jacob Wiebe had six steals

The Towhees wrap up league play this week. They were in Powell River to play Brooks yesterday (result unavailable at press time) and host Ballenas tomorrow to close out the regular season.

Meanwhile, the Towhees turned in a busy Saturday, playing a pair of exhibition games involving Top 10 Island teams.

Vanier, ranked No. 8 in this week’s poll, lost 75-73 to No. 3 Claremont Spartans in the afternoon then fell 73-59 to No. 6 Cowichan Thunderbirds in the evening.
