Vanier senior girls go undefeated; Hope Lewis named Player of the Tournament

The Vanier Towhees senior girls basketball team captured first place in the inaugural Brentwood Ogilvy Tournament last weekend.

The first round game pitted the Towhees against Gulf Islands School with the Towhees handily winning at 51-36.  Top scorers for Vanier were Dawson German with 17, Molly Mifsud nine, and Player of the Game Hope Lewis with eight.

The early Saturday morning game saw the Vanier girls challenged by two top-level international players from Bodwell Academy. The Turkish players were fast breaking scoring machines, but the Towhee defence held them to under their 30-point averages with the final score being 64-53.

Awesome defence by Sienna Barth earned her Player of the Game honours with Lewis scoring 19 points, German 14, and Chloe Speed chipped in 11.

The championship game of Vanier against an athletic Lambrick Park was a fast break run for the girls.  Vanier never trailed in the close game, resulting in the final score of 50-43.

Player of the Game was Sloan Hofmann scoring 14 points. Speed contributed 11 and Lewis added 10. Lewis also received Player of the Tournament honours.

Next games see the Towhees play Dover Bay and Carihi away, with Vanier in the Isfeld Invitational on Jan. 23-24.
