Maybe Smithers athletes should always compete in the pouring rain.
Several Smithers athletes recorded personal bests at the 2015 Athletics Championship Jamboree in Nanaimo July 10-12 … in the pouring rain.
“We weren’t expecting that when we went down,” said Haley Allen, who cleared 2.75 meters in the pole vault to bring home a silver medal. “The adrenalin and the pressure makes you want to try harder.”
She was competing in the Women’s 18- to 19-year-old category.
Fellow pole vaulter Grace Allen, competing in Girls 14- to 15-year-old category, notched her personal best of 2.65 metres and brought home the gold medal. She also competed in the long jump, reaching 4.14 metres and 13th place.
“It was just a really good day,” she said.
The Allen’s were part of a larger team from Smithers, who also did well at the competition.
Tyler Dozzi, competing in the Men’s 16- 17-year-old category, ran 9:04.62 in a tactical race to win the Gold Medal to win a tactical 3000m, and ran 4:11.35 in the 1500m for fourth place.
Megan Pinheiro, competing in the Girls 14- to 15-year-old category, set a personal best of 14.12 +1.4m/s in the 100m to finish 18th, and a personal best of 2.05m in the pole vault to finish sixth.
Hannah Pow, competing in the Girls 14- to 15-year-old category, ran a personal best of 3:53.11 in the 1200m to finish seventh, and 7:12.25 in the 2000m for another seventh.
Ryan Williams, competing in the Men’s 16- to 17-year-old category, ran a personal best of 4:24.95 in the 1500m for 16th (of 23), and ran a windy 2:06.24 in the 800m for 15th place (of 27).
