The Rex Red Army are doing just enough to get by as they try keep a lock on second place in Trail Commercial Hockey League action last week.
The Rex skated to a pair of exciting 5-4 wins over Firebird Thursday and OK Tire on Sunday, gaining a little breathing room on the Tire.
The Rex’s Tyler Bruce popped his second of the night 1:36 into the third period to break a 4-4 deadlock and earn the Army its 15th win of the season, giving them a three-point cushion on the third-place OK Tire.
After the Tire jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Peter Sheets goal, the Rex replied on a nice effort by Bruce at the 13-minute mark. The Army went up 2-1 when Andrew Jenner notched his 25th of the season with two minutes left in the period. But the Tires’ Shaun Venturini tied it at two before Jenner added his second of the night to make it 3-2.
The teams would trade goals in the final 90 seconds of the period when the inimitable Del Iannone put on a clinic and scored on a Rex power play.
However, with only five ticks left on the clock, Sheets put the Tire back within one and Venturini delivered his second blow of the night to tie the game 4-4 a minute into the third. However, 30 seconds later the Army’s Bruce netted the winner.
