The Trail Smoke Eaters put in one of their most impressive performances on the season, as they skated to a huge character win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Tuesday at the Cominco Arena.
Trail was without their top scorer Nick Halloran who was out with injury, but the players displayed discipline and an incredibly gutsy effort in the 5-3 victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Max Newton scored the winner, putting the Smokies up 4-2 with two minutes remaining in the second period, and then remained poised in the third as the Silverbacks threw everything they had at the Trail net, before Blaine Caton iced it for Trail with 2:47 left in the third.
Trail sit just three points back of Vernon for the final playoff spot in the Interior division and will resume play when they host the West Kelowna Warriors in a pair of games this weekend.
