Triathletes hit the podium in June

Busy month for members of Comox Valley Triathlon Club

Members of the Comox Valley Triathlon Club were frequent visitors to the awards podium this month.

Two triathlons took place on the Island, the first at Elk Lake in Victoria on June 17 and the second at Qualicum Beach on June 24.

The Elk Lake race was part of the Subaru Series, which consists of five triathlons, three taking place on Vancouver Island at Shawnigan Lake, Victoria and Sooke.

Don Blacklock took part in the Half Ironman, which involves a 1,900 metre swim in Elk Lake, an 86K bike and a 20K run. He finished third in his age group (65-69) in a time of 6 hours, 17 minutes. Audrey Erlandson took part in the Half Ironman Relay and her team also finished third in their category in a time of 5:34. Sandra Rowland finished the Half Ironman in 5:58 and Darcy Walters finished the Sprint in 1:54.

The Qualicum Beach Triathlon was a sprint distance event, consisting of a 400 metre swim, 18K bike and 5K run. Two CV Tri Club members finished first in their age groups. Derek Richmond was first in the 60-64 age group in a time of 1:07 and Robert Lundine placed first in the 65-69 age group in a time of 1:09.

Don Blacklock also had a successful race the previous month at the Shawnigan Lake Half Ironman on May 27. He finished first in his age group in a time of 6:06. By winning his age group, he qualified to represent Canada in an international triathlon in France next year.
