There are three Abbotsford senior boys high school teams with title hopes intact after day one of the B.C. high school senior boys basketball provincials at the Langley Events Centre.
In the 4A tournament, the W.J. Mouat Hawks took care of business on Wednesday by beating Handsworth 60-55.
Kenan Hadzovic scored a game-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds to help the sixth-ranked Hawks advance to round two.
Mouat now takes on Oak Bay today (Thursday) at 8:15 p.m.
Also in the 4A, it was a rough day one for the Yale Lions.
Yale lost 89-81 to Vancouver College, and head coach Euan Roberts was ejected late in the game for arguing with officials. Roberts has subsequently been suspended for the remainder of the tournament for his actions on Wednesday.
The Lions take on Belmont today at 8:30 a.m.
Over in the 3A tournament, both the Rick Hansen Hurricanes and the Robert Bateman Timberwolves moved on with wins on Wednesday.
Hansen, ranked number one, easily disposed of Cahiri 101-41.
The Hurricanes take on St. Thomas More Collegiate today at 6:45 p.m.
Bateman, buoyed by Nate Friesen’s 28 points, knocked off the seventh-seeded Nanaimo District 72-58.
The Timberwolves were one of only two higher seeded teams in the 3A tournament to win.
Bateman now takes on South Kamloops today at 6:45 p.m.
In the AA conference, the Abbotsford Christian Knights fell in round one 78-71 to Westsyde.
Levi Joose of the Knight scored a team-high 17 points in a losing cause.
ACS battles Smithers today at noon.
