Two local cyclists powered their way to triple gold at the 2013 BC Seniors Games in Kamloops Aug. 24-26.
Sixty-year-old Saltair cyclist Tom Sharpe finished first in three events for Novice riders aged 60-64, earning gold in the hill climb, time trial and road race events. Thetis Island’s Dave Steen, 71, earned identical honours in the Men’s 70-74 division.
Both athletes credited rigorous training regimens for their success. Sharpe rides an average of five times each week and he’s ridden in several fondos, he said, but competitive cycling is new to him.
Steen, meanwhile, is a devotee of the school of “hard interval” training, a routine he acquired while training with Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, his track coach at the University of Oregon. He’s no podium newcomer either; the former Toronto Star writer and editor won shotput gold at both the 1966 and 1970 Commonwealth Games.
