The DCT Chambers Trucking Coyotes picked up their first North Okanagan Bantam Super Hockey League win last weekend, icing Salmon Arm’s North Broadview Plumbing and Heating 3-2.

The ‘Yotes scored first in the opening period as Chris Aldrich deftly tipped Colton Schaper-Kotter’s point shot. Landen Harison mucked the puck out of the corner to start the play.

Late in the second period, defenceman-turned-forward Kayden Doughty danced up ice to put the truckers up by two, assisted by Jacob Brewer and Alyssa Racine.

Vernon looked to be in complete control as Schaper-Koter deked a couple of Salmon Arm defenders and ripped the 3-0 goal with four minutes to play. However, Salmon Arm replied with goals a minute apart by Derrian Kobewka and Riley Johnson to make things interesting.

In other Bantam play, two late goals and two highlight-reel saves in the dying seconds helped Interior Savings Just Orange earn a 4-4 draw with the Five Star Awards Cougars Sunday at Civic Arena.

With the Cougars leading 4-2, and the Orange seemingly unable to crack the stellar second-half goaltending of Nicholas Maglio, Evan Trottier stuffed a rebound through Maglio’s pads and just over the goal line on a powerplay with 6:31 remaining. Chase Batchelor then scored his second of the game on an unassisted breakaway at 15:33 to draw Interior Savings even.

That set the stage for a frantic final 20 seconds.

With the face-off in Orange territory, the Cougars’ Troy Main won a draw cleanly to Reid Lawrence, who one-timed a howitzer from the top of the circle, only to have goalie Sam Knox get a piece of it with his stick.

Knox, who turned 15 Thursday, made two more point-blank saves to preserve the tie.

Jordan Romailler had the other goal for the Orange, who started Caedon Bellmann in net and received a stellar performance from weekend birthday boy Braydie (Boo) Webber, 14.

The teams were tied 1-1 after one and the Coyotes led 3-2 after two.

Braeden Beacom had two goals for the Cougars, who started Jordan Foster in goal. Keenon Jeberg, on a crisp tic-tac-toe passing play from Nick Hartwig and Jake Barnett, and Kimberly Whitelaw, driving hard to the net, had the other markers.

In exhibition play Saturday in Armstrong, the Cougars fell 6-1 to the North Okanagan Knights.

Hartwig, assisted by Talon Williams, put the shortmanned Five Star crew up 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

Eli Dwyer and Wesley Graves replied for North Okanagan in period two. The Cougars kept it close until the ran into penalty troubles with 12 minutes to play. The Knights pulled away with two powerplay goals from Dwyer, and one from Nicholas Walker, who also had an even-strength goal.

Julia McCaig and Nathan Hamming drew assists.

Foster and Maglio were both solid for the Cats. Levi Petersen and Wyatt Fowler were stellar in the victory for the Knights.

Lakers in Halloween spirit

The Lumby Tirecraft Lakers ‘ghouls’ team showed no fear in playing to a 1-1 Bantam draw with host Chase on Saturday.

Icing only 10 bodies, the Lakers put a scare into the home team. Lakers’ ghoulie (Mad) Maddie Johnson, stopped a late third-period penalty shot and ‘Vladnessa’ Yaremcio scored with 53 seconds to salvage the tie. Hanna (Satana) Mitchell, named hard worker, provided the assist.

The rest of the Lakers ghouls – (Evil) Emily Romailler, (Grossey) Josey Nerling, (Demonic) Demi Williamson, Taylor (Hissin) Cousins, ‘Slayton’ Kineshenko, Chelsea (You in Hell) Marshall and (Grave) Robyn Alexis – were all spooktacular.

Coach Arnie (Severed) Head was proud of the Lakers’ play.

Bolts bow to North Okanagan

In Pee Wee play, North Okanagan shaded the Stevenson Mechanical Bolts 3-2 Sunday at Kal Tire Place.

Less than a minute in, the Bolts got a jumpstart from Jordyn Morris, who picked off a clearance attempt and drilled a shot home through traffic.

Ethan Keber stood tall in the Vernon net, holding the Knights to a single goal through 30 minutes. Teja Sheldrake, tending the second half, was tested early as he shut down a breakaway with a lightning-quick glove save.

Shortly after, speedster Shaelyn Cecchini forced a turnover in North Okanagan’s zone, which led to a Sapien Joe snapshot that went five-hole.

The Knights tied it late in the second, setting up a frantic final frame. The Bolts attacked in waves, gaining an edge in territorial play and shot count, however, the Knights weathered the storm and recorded the win on a late shorthanded goal.

Samurais topple Warriors

Nic Morgan and Noah Ferriera, with his first Atom goal, handled the offence as the McDonald’s Golden Warriors fell 7-2 to Salmon Arm Samurais last weekend.

Jonathan Finlayson and Morgan providing the assists. Morgan earned the Golden Jersey for playing with passion. Finlayson collected the Canada Jersey for his passing and steady work on the blueline.

Garrin Best toughed it out to help his shortbenched team, but eventually left due to illness. Hunter Whiting was incredible on the forecheck and in the faceoff circle. Joshua Donison was stellar in goal.

The female Atom/Pee Wee Lakers showed moxy in a 10-0 loss to Kelowna on Sunday.
