The Port Alberni Tsunami Swim Team had a fantastic performance at the VIR regional championship swim meet last month in Nanaimo.

With seven qualified swimmers and one coach in tow, the athletes earned 20 top eight finishes including four medals.

Of special note were Anamika Giesbrecht (11) with a gold medal win in the 800 freestyle and Logan Jager (11) who won bronze medals in the 800 free, 400 free and 200 fly.

Additionally, hed coach Veronique Jager said, the club is proud of Marco Nikolin (13) and Bailey Thompson (13) who both worked  hard to qualify for the first time for this championship.

The swim club is a competitive club, however more than 70 per cent of the youngsters in the club are there for fitness and to learn how to swim better and more confidently.

“We coach all the kids with the same passion and dedication, thus when they are ready to make the move from fitness to competition, it is a very easy smooth transition,” says Jager.

The club is open to all youths in the Alberni Valley aged five to 18; no experience is required.

The next event for the swim club is the AAA BC Provincial championship in March.
