Pair of silver medals for Abbotsford-trained gymnast at Elite Canada event

The recent Elite Canada gymnastics event saw six Twisters Gymnastics members compete against some of the best in the country, but only one local athlete walked way with hardware.

Elite Canada is a national competition that brings together the top athletes from across Canada from the novice, junior, and senior categories.

This event identifies the top junior and senior athletes for the competitive season and is the selection process for the National teams for men’s gymnastics.

The women seek qualification for High Performance status, which gives them the right to compete at the Canadian Championships in Montreal.

Zachary Clay earned silver medals in both rings and parallel bars in the senior men’s division at the event, which ran from Feb. 2 to 5 in Halifax. Clay also finished sixth overall in pommel horse.

Other Twisters athletes competing included: Steven Chaplin (25th on pommel horse, 14th on rings, 11th on vault, 14th on parallel bars, 15th on horizontal bars, and 10th all-around in the men’s division), Brienna Gaspar (35th all-around in junior women), Marissa Engh – (27th all-around in novice women), Jordis Kliewer – (35th all-around, novice women) and Mikhayla Rosenow (38th all-around, novice women).

“Twisters Gymnastics is very proud of all these athletes accomplishments at the meet, they all did an amazing job,” stated Twisters director of media relations Sophia Kliewer.
